The Voice You'd Never Use on a Friend
Most people would never tell a friend who was struggling that they are lazy, too much, or beyond help, yet those are often the exact words used on themselves in private. Self-compassion is not about lowering the bar or excusing harm. It is about noticing that inner voice and asking a simple question: would I say this to someone I loved? If not, it is worth finding a truer sentence, one with the same honesty but without the cruelty. Being gentle with yourself is not the opposite of accountability. It is usually what makes accountability possible to hold at all.
